Field Report October 6, 2007 Operation Handgun
Training Day Hosted By WC1
October 6, 2007
WC1 in attendance : Bishop, Doc, Caber (100%)

October SMVM training was hosted by WC1.

The weather should have been cool, sunny, breezy and just plain beautiful.
Instead we suffered through record heat.  Marathon runners in Chicago were
dying for goodness sake!  Anyway, given the ever present Michigan possibility
of freezing rain, I have no complaints.  Hot, sunny and beautiful.

The order of the day:

0930 - 1030
3 mile road march

1100 - 1300
handgun clinic

1300 - 1400
chow

1400 - 1530
"deer rifle" sight-in and four position competitive shoot
(scoped bolt action rifles encouraged, no bipods allowed, slings recommended;
competitors must be able to shoot offhand [aka standing], kneeling, sitting, and
prone - 12 rounds of ammo needed)

The road march went well with everyone agreeing that it was very hot and
muggy.  The heavy mud along the road slowed us down at points but that's why
we go out there - to get dirty and sweaty and covered in gunpowder residue!

The handgun clinic was filled to capacity (12 students).  Everyone did great and I
think everyone learned something.

Chow was provided by SMVM support (Thumper) and was excellent.  This guy
knows how to feed hungry warriors.

The deer rifle sight in and four position competitive shoot was a lot of fun.
Contestants fired 12 rounds (three from each position).  After each course of fire
the shooter's group size was measured.  The shooter with the lowest total of four
scores was the winner.  Mak9 (a
Pioneer) came out the winner and took home a
copy of
Fred's Guide to Becoming a Rifleman along with a couple of
qualification AQT targets - good job!

Bishop and Doc had to bug out early so about 1600 we geared up and hiked out
- hot and tired, but with a definite sense of accomplishment.

If you weren't there, you should have been.  Shooting both near and far is a skill
everyone needs.

Remember: defending YOUR way of life is YOUR responsibility.

See you in the field....
